Bluffton, SC (August 16, 2023) – The Bluffton Police Department wants to work with the local community to keep commuters safe in response to the rising number of traffic fatalities on Beaufort County roads, particularly in the wake of a tragic motorcycle accident on Buckwalter Pkwy last week.
On Monday, August 21, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the department will host a “Community Safety Discussion” to discuss safety initiatives the agency is implementing in Bluffton. As with Bluffton’s Lutzie 43 program, attendees can also make a commitment to stop distracted driving by signing the “Stay Safe, Bluffton!” pledge.
Since the year’s beginning, five fatalities have occurred on Bluffton roads, bringing the total number of fatalities in Beaufort County to 17. 2023 might surpass any previous record for road fatalities on Bluffton and Beaufort County roadways if fatal accidents keep occurring at the same rate. According to data from the SC Department of Public Safety, the year 2021 saw the highest recent rise, with nine fatalities occurring inside the area of Bluffton’s town limits and 26 in Beaufort County.
Police in Bluffton, though, also hope to avoid non-fatal accidents. The town experiences roughly 1400 collisions annually on average, most of which are brought on by driving while impaired, using a cell phone, eating, drinking, or attending to personal grooming.
At the community meeting, Bluffton police will share what they’re doing to decrease the number of traffic accidents.
Bluffton Chief of Police Joe Babkiewicz was interviewed and said, “Due to the numerous comments on social media after the recent fatality on Highway 278 last Sunday, I thought a public discussion was necessary to educate our community about the ways Bluffton officers are proactively attempting to reduce collisions”

I met with Harry Brown personally and he sat with me for 20 minutes at our initial consultation to explain everything. He even called after my surgery to see how I was doing. I met with him several more times after that and was kept informed about my case throughout. I highly recommend Harry Brown as an attorney.
