Covington, GA – Five People Killed, One Injured in Head-On Collision
Covington, Georgia (April 8, 2023) – A van collided with a pickup truck on a Georgia highway, killing five people and injuring one.
The accident occurred on State Route 142 in Covington, east of Atlanta, on Saturday. According to a Sargent with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, all five of those killed were in the van.
According to sheriff’s investigators, the pickup driver was hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigators stated that rain was falling at the time of the accident, but they had not determined if the weather was a factor in the crash.
A man who lives near the scene of the accident said he heard the crash and ran out to help.
There wasn’t an inch of that van that wasn’t on fire. ” the mad said. “The thud I heard was like there was no brakes. It wasn’t a screech, it was a direct hit.”
According to the man, he grabbed a kitchen fire extinguisher, but the fire was too large.
Preliminary investigations found that the truck left its lane prior to the collision. Deputies would not say whether the pickup driver would face charges.
The names of those killed or injured were not immediately released by authorities.
